Inlays & Onlays

What are Dental Inlays & Onlays?

Inlays and onlays are indirect restorations crafted outside the mouth in our dental laboratory. These are used when cavities are too large for standard fillings.

  • Inlays: These are custom-made restorations designed to fit the grooves of a tooth, but
they don’t extend to the tooth’s cusps. Inlays can be created from materials like gold
or porcelain based on the cavity’s size and depth.
  • Onlays: Slightly larger than inlays, onlays cover more extensive areas of a tooth,
including its cusps. They are used for larger cavities and offer a balance between a
    filling and a crown.

The Inlay and Onlay Procedure

During the initial visit, your dentist will prepare the affected tooth and take an impression. This impression is sent to a laboratory to craft the custom restoration. A temporary filling will
protect your tooth until the final inlay or onlay is ready. At the follow-up visit, the temporary filling is replaced with the permanent inlay or onlay, which is then bonded to the tooth and polished for a smooth finish.

Inlays and onlays provide a highly effective solution for restoring teeth that have experienced moderate to severe damage, offering a strong and long-lasting alternative to traditional fillings. These custom-made restorations are designed to match the natural contour and color of your teeth, ensuring both durability and an aesthetically pleasing result. By preserving more of the natural tooth structure, inlays and onlays help maintain the integrity of your smile while delivering superior protection against further decay.

Inlays & Onlays Procedure Steps

Initial Examination

Your dentist evaluates the affected tooth and discusses the need for an inlay or onlay based on the cavity size and location.

Tooth Preparation

The damaged or decayed part of the tooth is removed, and the tooth is shaped to fit the custom inlay or onlay.

Impression

An impression of the prepared tooth is taken and sent to a dental laboratory to create the custom inlay or onlay.

Temporary Restoration

A temporary filling is placed to protect the prepared tooth while the permanent restoration is being made.

Fitting the Permanent Restoration

Once the inlay or onlay is ready, the temporary filling is removed, and the permanent restoration is fitted and adjusted for proper alignment.

Bonding and Polishing

The inlay or onlay is bonded to the tooth, and any excess material is polished for a smooth finish.

Follow-Up

A follow-up visit ensures the restoration fits well and addresses any adjustments if needed.
