What is Sedation Dentistry ?

Sedation dentistry treatment is used to help patients relax or calm during dental procedures.

Levels of sedation use in our service

For many people, going to the dentist is a source of anxiety. It causes people to put in much more serious problems. We are providing safe, painless dentistry to use sedation dentistry. Depending on the level of sedation the patient requires, we have various options for patient needs. Oral sedation, inhaled sedation such as nitrous oxide (laughing gas), IV sedation, and even general anaesthesia are the most commonly used in our services.

Gas Sedation

Nitrous oxide is a colourless, pleasant, non-irritating gas that can be inhaled. For many years, nitrous oxide has been the predominant method of sedation in dentistry. The patient receives 50-70 percent oxygen with no less than 30 percent nitrous oxide, which is considered safe. The patient can breathe on their own and has complete control over their body processes. The patient may develop moderate amnesia and fall asleep during their session, forgetting all that transpired.

Oral Sedation

Oral sedation, often known as “Sleep Dentistry,” is a type of conscious sedation that is provided through the mouth. Anti-Anxiety Pills, often known as benzodiazepines, are the most widely given dental anxiety medications. These medications reduce anxiety by binding to and reducing activity in the brain’s “fear” receptors.

Procedure for Gas Sedation

Pre-Sedation Consultation

Before undergoing gas sedation, the dentist will conduct a thorough review of your medical history, including any allergies or current medications. This helps ensure that nitrous oxide is safe for you. The dentist will also explain the procedure and what to expect, addressing any questions or concerns.

Administration of Nitrous Oxide

Once you are comfortably seated, a small mask is placed over your nose. Through this mask, you’ll inhale a mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen. The dentist will adjust the concentration of nitrous oxide to ensure you achieve a relaxed and calm state. The gas typically takes effect within a few minutes, helping you feel light, calm, and possibly slightly euphoric.

Monitoring During the Procedure

Throughout the dental procedure, the dentist will monitor your vital signs and comfort level closely. Since the depth of sedation can be easily adjusted, the dentist can increase or decrease the nitrous oxide levels as needed to maintain the appropriate level of relaxation. During this time, you remain conscious and in control of your body functions.

Completion of Treatment and Recovery

At the end of the procedure, the dentist will reduce the nitrous oxide and increase the oxygen flow to help clear the remaining gas from your system. This process typically takes a few minutes. Afterward, you’ll be able to recover quickly, as nitrous oxide sedation has no lingering effects like drowsiness or grogginess, allowing you to return to your daily activities soon after the appointment.

Post-Sedation Guidance

After the procedure, the dentist will provide any necessary aftercare instructions and may discuss the outcome of the treatment. Since the effects of nitrous oxide wear off rapidly, there’s usually no need for an extended recovery period or additional assistance for leaving the dental office.
